How to buy electronics on sale in South Africa
Electronics are where inflated discounts do the most damage, because the numbers are big. A "save R3,000" badge feels worth chasing even when the real saving is half that. Tech prices also move in a fairly predictable pattern, which makes them easier to read once you know what to look for.
Tech prices drift down, then jump on a real deal
A laptop or TV usually launches high, then drifts down quietly over months as newer stock arrives. The genuine deals are the sharp steps below that drift, not the slow slide itself. If a price has been easing down for half a year, today's number is not a sale, it is just the current price. A real deal is a clear drop below the line the item has been holding.
Watch the model cycle
The best honest discounts on phones, laptops and TVs tend to land when a replacement model is near. The outgoing model is often as good for everyday use and meaningfully cheaper. The catch is stock: these prices do not last, so the history matters more than usual. Check that the current price is genuinely below where the item has been sitting, then move if it is.
Ignore the bundle maths
Electronics retailers lean on bundles: a "free" carry case, a voucher, an extended guarantee. Price the item on its own first. If the standalone price is not good against its history, the bundle is there to distract you from that. A genuine deal stands up before any extras are added.

Whatever the category, the same test holds: is the current price at or near the lowest the item has actually reached, and is that backed by real history rather than a fresh was-price? On every deal page we show the lowest and highest we have recorded and a chart of how the price moved, so you can answer that in a few seconds before spending real money.
